Today we will introduce you the latest and the greatest drone made by DJI. This drone is the DJI Inspire 2 which comes to you with amazing capabilities. Inspire 2 is the third release of DJI Inspire series, which is a series of great professional drones with great cameras integrated to them. This drone has the ability to shoot 5.2K (5280 x 2972 and 5280 x 2160) videos in CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes formats, if you chose to purchase it with DJI Zenmuse X5S Camera.

The first release of the series which is DJI Inspire 1, is the first film making drone in the world to integrate an HD video transmission system, 360° rotating gimbal and a 4K camera, as well as the simplicity of app control. The second release is DJI Inspire 1 Pro and RAW. The Inspire 2 has taken everything that was good about previous Inspire drones and has improved them.

Introducing DJI Inspire 2.

This powerful drone has the ability to shoot 5.2K (5280 x 2972 and 5280 x 2160) in CinemaDNG RAW, Apple ProRes and more other formats (5.2K resolution and CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes formats are supported only with the DJI Zenmuse X5S Camera). This drone supports two DJI Cameras through the gimbal port, which are DJI Zenmuse X5S and DJI Zenmuse X4S. You have option to select the camera you want, when purchasing the DJI Inspire 2.

DJI Zenmuse X5S is the most advanced camera by the DJI yet, and only it has the ability to shoot 5.2K (5280 x 2972 and 5280 x 2160) videos and videos in CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes formats. But with the DJI Zenmuse X4S also, you can shoot great quality videos in 4K (4096 x 2160 and 3840×2160), but the supported formats are H.265 and H.264 only.

CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes are two formats for recording RAW videos which are great for professional film making and television production applications. Those two RAW video formats give you a great quality and a huge flexibility when editing and fine tuning the videos shot. Video Transmission System of DJI Inspire 2.

For the people who are already familiar with drones with cameras integrated to it, it’s nothing new to them that you (pilot with the remote control) can view the live videos which the drone camera sees. But for the people who are new, we want to say that you can live stream 1080p (1920 x 1080) FHD or 720p (1280 x 720) HD resolution videos (regardless of the resolution you are recording at the time) of what the drone camera sees. You just need to have a iPad, iPhone or a similar smart device mounted to the remote controller. To transmit this high quality video from the drone to remote controller, DJI uses their own wireless technology called Lightbridge. Then from the remote controller to your smart device, the videos will be transmitted through a USB cable.

Image that describes the live video transmission system of DJI Inspire 2

There is an additional VGA (640 x 480) camera which is fixed to the front of the Inspire 2 and it is a forward-facing camera. This is called FPV camera and it is used for vision sensing. Not only the main camera video feed is delivered to the remote controller, but also the FPV camera video feed as well, thanks to the dual signal frequency and dual channel in the video transmission system. Therefore you can view both camera views simultaneously, through the Picture in View feature. If there is an optional slave remote controller as well, then both users of both remote controllers, can see live video feeds from both cameras.

Video Transmission Range in FHD and HD.

Now with the DJI Inspire 2, you will able to transmit live videos for up to 7km (4.3mi) distance. So you can see what the Inspire 2’s camera sees, from 7km (4.3mi) away. This is a improved range, compared to the range of  the previous release of the Inspire series, which was only 5km (3.1mi). This 7km (4.3mi) is also the maximum controllable range between the Inspire 2 and the remote controller. That means you can send the Inspire 2 up to a maximum of 7km (4.3mi) direct distance from the remote controller. That is a huge distance for a professional film maker.

DJI Inspire 2’s structure is made by Magnesium Aluminium composite shell and it its arms are made by Carbon Fiber. It has  a transforming design. It is also equipped with 2-axis FPV camera for vision sensing. Brand new CineCore 2.0 image processing system built into the aircraft nose, made it possible to record 5.2K (5280 x 2972 and 5280 x 2160) RAW videos in CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes video formats. Not like the previous releases of Inspire series, Inspire 2 can be equipped with a MicroSD card and a DJI CINESSD (have to purchase separately), a Solid State Drive specifically designed for DJI drones. Previous Inspire drones could only be equipped with a MicroSD card.

DJI Inspire 2 uses DJI’s own wireless technology called Lightbridge, to make the wireless connection between the drone and the remote controller. This technology gives you a 7km (4.3mi) controllable range for the DJI Inspire 2. That means you can fly this drone 7km (4.3mi) direct distance, away from you (remote controller). In the previous release of the Inspire series, this controllable range was only 5km (3.1mi). In the Lightbridge technology, wireless signal frequency is switching between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz.

You can add an additional remote controller to the DJI Inspire 2 in the slave mode. This is to make the flight easy by giving drone control to one user (pilot) and the camera control to another user (photographer). This allows you to record more complex and dramatic videos. DJI Inspire 2 supports multiple slave remote controllers in addition to the main remote controllers.

Recording Videos in CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes.

Image showing trademarks of CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes

All the recorded video will be stored on either MicroSD card or DJI CINESSD. For recording videos in CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProRes videos formats, you must have your DJI Inspire loaded with a DJI CINESSD Solid State Drive. That is because only DJI CINESSD provides the fast writing speeds that is required for recording CinemaDNG RAW and Apple ProResDJI CINESSD comes in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB storage capacities. From those storage capacities, only the 240GB and 480GB DJI CINESSD drives provide writing speeds up to 4.2Gbps, which is required for recording 5.2K (5280 x 2972) (with any fps value) videos and 4K (4096 x 2160 or 3840×2160) (with 50 fps or 60 fps) videos in CinemaDNG RAW video format.

But there is no issue with any DJI CINESSD drive, when recording Apple ProRes video format in any resolution with any fps value. Same goes for the CinemaDNG RAW video format when recording 4K (4096 x 2160 or 3840×2160) videos, if recorded with a fps value of 30 or below. If you are recording H.265 or H.264 video formats only, then you do not need to purchase a DJI CINESSD as the writing speeds of the MicroSD is good enough for any resolution with any fps value, with those video formats. If you are purchasing a DJI CINESSD drive then you should purchase a DJI CINESSD Station as well. Because it is the SSD drive reader, which the DJI CINESSD drives can be plugged into, when you need to read the content of the DJI CINESSD drives, for the post-production.

We have provided the supported video formats with the resolutions and the fps values, for each DJI CINESSD drive in the charts below.

Ultra Efficient Workflow in Post-production.

The DJI Inspire 2 creative workflow is really efficient now, with the CinemaDNG RAW, Apple ProRes and other common video formats for post-production in film making. FAT32/exFAT file systems are also supported, which allows viewing and fast copying of files direct from the DJI CINESSD without any additional software. A diagram that describes the efficient workflow of DJI Inspire 2 is shown below.

Powerful Flight Performance of DJI Inspire 2.

DJI Inspire 2 is a very fast drone with a top speed of 94kmph (58mph). It takes only 5 seconds for this drone to go from 0kmph (0mph) to 80kmph (50mph). Maximum descent speed is 9m/s and maximum ascent speed is 6m/s. Maximum flight time is 25 minutes when using DJI Zenmuse X5S camera and 27 minutes when using DJI Zenmuse X4S camera. This much of a flight time is possible because, it is powered by a dual battery system. This dual battery system also provides the battery redundancy. In case of a failure of one battery, DJI Inspire 2 will continue to fly with the other battery.

The more power provided by dual battery system allows the Inspire 2 to fly in more extreme conditions, including over 2500m-5000m above sea level (optional dedicated high altitude propellers needs to be purchased for this). Also it can fly in temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F), using self-heating technology, in the intelligent flight batteries.

Intelligent Flight Modes of DJI Inspire 2.

Image that describes the Spotlight Pro mode

Spotlight Pro Mode

There are number of intelligent flight modes are available in the DJI Inspire 2. Spotlight Pro is one of them, which is a powerful tracking mode that allows even single pilots to capture complex, dramatic images. It uses advanced visual tracking algorithms to lock onto a subject during flight, regardless of the direction that the Inspire 2 flies, creating shots that would once have required a dedicated camera operator. In addition to Spotlight Pro, a range of other intelligent flight and shooting modes are available. Obstacle avoidance is optimized when using Point of Interest and Waypoint flight modes, making complex shots simple and repeatable. All the available intelligent flight modes are listed below.

  • Spotlight Pro Mode.
    • Quick Mode.
    • Composition Mode.
  • Point of Interest Mode.
  • Waypoint Mode.
  • QuickSpin Mode.
  • TapFly Mode.
  • ActiveTrack Mode.

Smart Return to Home Feature.

Image showing the Return to Home feature of DJI Inspire 1

Return to Home (RTH) is a flight mode which triggers automatically, if the connection is lost between the Inspire 2 drone and the remote controller. Then it will automatically return to the spot where it was launched, along its original route. Then it will land safely. It will also try to reconnect quickly after losing connection. If the connection is established again, then Return to Home (RTH) path will be changed to a straight line. Even when Return to Home (RTH) mode is enabled and Inspire 2 is returning home, obstacle sensing systems are still active and Inspire 2 will avoid any obstacles in its path. This Return to Home (RTH) mode can be triggered manually as well, if you want to bring it to the same spot where it was launched.

Forward and downward vision systems enable the Inspire 2 to detect obstacles up to 30m (98ft) ahead. Upward facing infrared sensors scan obstacles 5m (16ft) above, adding protection when flying in enclosed spaces. Obstacle sensing systems are active during Normal Flight, Return to Home (RTH) and all Intelligent Flight Modes. These sensors are core components of the DJI Flight Autonomy system, which brings the below intelligent features to the DJI Inspire 2.

  • Obstacle avoidance.
  • Accurate indoor hovering and positioning.
  • Upward obstacle avoidance.
  • Terrain detection.
  • Automatic obstacle avoidance during Return to Home (RTH).
